This is Gideon, one of my absolute favorite little guys at work. He is turning two on May 13th and I have had the pleasure of being his PT since he was two months old. I am asking for your prayers because Gideon has been in the hospital for over two weeks and is undergoing his fourth open heart surgery as I am typing. He has Down syndrome and was born with five holes in his little heart. He had his first surgery at three months old and had the second at 13 months old to repair something that went wrong with the first one. Since the second surgery in September, he has had pneumonia four times because his heart and lungs weren't working together well enough to keep extra fluid out of his lungs. A particularly nasty pneumonia is what landed him in the hospital again on April 22nd, where it was determined that his heart muscle had started to pull away from the patch that was placed in September. He had this third surgery on April 29th, which lasted for over 11 hours and he ended up having a total valve replacement with a mechanical valve instead of another valve repair like they had originally planned. Gideon has been sedated and on mechanical ventilation with an external pacemaker keeping his heart going for a week now. Every morning the cardiologist would test his heart to see if it would take over without the pacer keeping it going and he has flat-lined each time. Because of this, they had to open him up again today to put in a permanent pacemaker (open heart surgery number four). This has been an awful ordeal for his mother, especially since she is pretty much alone with him at the hospital all the time (dad isn't in the picture). I have been visiting as much as I can along with some other co-workers and that seems to cheer his mom up a bit. Please pray for both of them, that mom will have the strength to endure an even longer hospital stay and that Gideon will be back to his charming self as soon as possible. He is a vibrant and happy guy who loves to dance and cheer for himself when he does something exciting (like stacking blocks or showing us how long he can stand up), and he was just starting to walk before he landed in the hospital again. Thanks so much for keeping him in your prayers.
